Backfiring bike, gamer's frustration spark armed response

Armed police responded to reports of possible gunshots in Dunedin last night but it turns out the disturbance was due to a video game and a motorbike.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen said police were called about 5pm to Paterson St in Abbotsford by a concerned neighbour who thought they had heard yelling and gunshots from a nearby address.

"Police inquiries revealed it was the sound of a motorbike backfiring at the same time a young male was yelling at his friends over online gaming frustrations."

A number of armed police responded to the call, but were stood down.

He said the neighbour did the right thing in calling police with their concerns.
