Being on the other side of the world from your family when your home country is in turmoil is no easy thing, Bahraini student Noor Almahdi says.

She was one of about 20 Bahrainis protesting yesterday on the Museum Reserve against the violence being used to quell pro-democracy protesters in their Middle Eastern home country.

Ms Almahdi (21), who left her home in Manama the day before the protests started to come to Dunedin, said it was hard to get through to family in Bahrain.

The internet was slow and social networking websites had been blocked.

From what information was getting out, she learned the Government was attacking peaceful protesters who just wanted democracy, better salaries and living conditions.

The Government was even closing hospitals and invading homes, she said.

"We want the whole world to know what is happening. I wish I could go home."
