In a statement, carnival event manager Xanthe Naylor said the carnival on June 12-13 would have a new theme in ‘‘A Rustle in the Night’’.
She said First Church would glow with lantern light, playful shadows and friendly nighttime creatures.
The carnival would display a wonderful world of creatures that lived in the night and the undergrowth, she said. From glowing dragons to watchful ruru and ancient tuatara, the night would come alive with curious company.
Dunedin Midwinter Celebrations Trust chairman Paul Smith said the carnival was ‘‘constantly evolving and it’s such a pleasure to see the story coming together with lanterns, costumes and delightful characters’’.
Ms Naylor said the carnival would introduce timed sessions to help ease crowd pressures and create a more enjoyable experience for all attendees. There would be two 90-minute sessions per night, a change driven by feedback from the community.
‘‘We have spent the last few years experimenting with our event format and location in an effort to create the best experience possible for everyone,’’ she said.
‘‘Audience feedback has been invaluable in shaping this year’s carnival, which features a bigger procession, more roving acts, immersive indoor installations and a new two-session format designed to make the experience seamless for all.’’
Each session gives visitors plenty of time to explore installations, enjoy performances and experience the full programme without overcrowding.
The first session runs from 5.30pm-7pm and the next session starts at 7.30pm.
On June 13, there will be a low-sensory session from 4pm-5pm. The session was designed for those sensitive to crowds, loud music, or flashing lights, and participants are welcome to stay a little longer if they choose.
Tickets go on sale on the carnival website on April 13 and there will be limited gate sales.
Workshops will take place in Meridian Mall on the three weekends before the festival.
An adult workshop will take place at Tuhura Otago Museum on May 27-28.
Those with lanterns made in the workshops will get free entry to the carnival.
