The structural integrity of the glass ceiling system at Wall Street mall will be tested today.

In 2012, a glass ceiling panel shattered and the Dunedin City Council responded byadding a protective film to the ceiling to prevent it happening again.

Council group manager property services Laura McElhone said the test would ensure the film acted as expected.

A ceiling panel would be broken and monitored to see how the protective film performed in holding up the broken glass, Dr McElhone said.

Preparations for the replacement of glass facade panels at the mall would also start tomorrow. Scaffolding would be erected on George St and work was expected to start in about a week, she said.

The facades were being replaced with new panels which significantly reduced the likelihood of them breaking.

The new glass meant protective film was no longer needed, she said.
