The Cadbury Chocolate Carnival Fun Run was shortened in Dunedin yesterday to avoid a frosty start.
Race director Phil Coakes said the run usually started at the Caledonian Sports Ground and competitors ran across a bridge to Butts Rd.
Yesterday, the bridge was covered with frost so the race began on Butts Rd.
''They would have come out there full of enthusiasm and someone would have fallen over, so it's a common sense safety measure,'' Mr Coakes said.
Consequently, the fun run was shorter than the usual 5km for walkers and 10km for runners.
Nearly 200 competitors entered the event, which was fewer than for the event last year, he said.
''Maybe people haven't come out because of the frost.''
Dunedin brothers Joshua and Julian Goulding ran the race dressed as a pirate ship.
''We went a little bit overboard,'' Julian said.
