Blade left in police station cells

Contractors left a box-cutter blade in the cells of the Dunedin Central Police Station, it has been revealed.

Work to upgrade the custodial suite at the station has been under way for months.

In February, contractors ``inadvertently left a box-cutter blade adjacent to an area they had been working on'', Otago Coastal area commander Jason Guthrie confirmed yesterday.

The blade was discovered as the cells were being prepared for an inmate.

``The blade was discovered soon after by the duty watchhouse officer as part of a standard pre-placement cell inspection and reported in accordance with health and safety protocols,'' Insp Guthrie said.

``A thorough inquiry as to how the blade was left behind was conducted in conjunction with the contractor, and the contractor protocols have been modified accordingly.''

Police did not respond to questions about the reasons for the upgrade or when work was expected to be completed.
