Firefighters took almost two hours to put out a large blaze at a house in Outram on Saturday.

Fire Service shift manager Andrew Norris said an Outram fire crew responded to a call at 3.25pm and was on scene within 10 minutes.

The property was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived and two more crews from Mosgiel, as well as a Dunedin City Council tanker, were called in to help.

"The Outram crew did an 'exterior attack' only, which reflected the fact the fire was well involved,'' Mr Norris said.

The fire was contained by 5.15pm but firefighters remained at the scene until 7pm to dampen down hot spots and keep an eye on the property, he said.

The scene was not declared safe until 7.30pm.

It was not clear what caused the fire, Mr Norris said.

The extent of damage was also not known.

It appeared no-one was at the property when the fire broke out.
