Blind cartoonist draws Dunedin

A legally blind cartoonist born in Timaru, raised in Canterbury, and resettled in Dunedin is taking his skills from the streets to the workshop floor.

Brent Harpur might not be able to capture the finer details of physical appearance available to someone with perfect vision, but is able to commit to paper his subjects' foibles and personality traits.

Mr Harpur's vision has detoriated to the point where he is totally blind in his right eye, with limited vision in his left.

However, that has not affected his career as a street cartoonist, or prevented him from working his way around the world.

Mr Harpur will be sharing his skills with children at two workshops in North East Valley during the school holidays.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

You can help us continue to bring you local news you can trust by becoming a supporter.
