Watch: Boom times for daredevil crane operators

Eyes were on the sky across Dunedin as a massive crane for the hospital build rose above the city.

Eagle-eyed observers also spotted daredevil crane operators making their way along the boom at various times yesterday.

At one point two workers were perched at the very end of the boom as it pointed to the sky.

The arrival of the three large-scale cranes on the site late last week marked a major milestone for the project, Health Minister Simeon Brown said.

The cranes mean the project is transitioning from foundation works into the main vertical construction phase.

The boom for the first of three tower cranes at the hospital build was bolted into place yesterday.

The 11-storey inpatient building is the largest phase of the new hospital and is expected to be complete in late 2031.
