A generous 12-year-old's idea to raise money for the Child Cancer Foundation by shaving her head has become reality.

Green Island School year 8 pupil Nikita Bathgate thought of the idea last year and has been fundraising since last month.

Nikita has been gathering donations and holding sausage sizzles, and by Tuesday she had raised about $1000.

That was the day her hair was shaved off.

Nikita said she would have liked to donate her hair as a wig but, because her hair had dye in it, she decided to raise money instead.

Nikita said she had been "feeling a little bit nervous'' before she got her hair shaved, but afterwards, although it felt a bit strange having no hair, she felt great to have been able to do it.

Nikita's family were there and her mum, Kelly Bathgate, said she was proud of her daughter as it was a brave thing to do.

"It's lucky I'm a hairdresser because she will be able to have lots of cool hair styles as it grows back,'' Mrs Bathgate said.

School principal Steve Hayward said they were proud of Nikita and it was great to see friends and family supporting her.
