Hundreds of used clothing items, including a mass of warm hats and scarves, as well as jackets, were on sale - some at bargain prices, including items for $1, or even less for bulk buying by the bag.
Music honours students Rachel Trainor and Pania Simmonds both enjoyed the market day, which was part of Otago University Students' Association reorientation social activities.
Ms Trainor said the event, near the University Union building, provided a "really good opportunity" for students to dispose of any "extra stuff".
It was also "a great way of meeting people", she said.
An OUSA event co-ordinator, Dan Hendra, said there were some "fantastic" bargains.
Four bands entertained market shoppers, and, later, an International Food Festival and roller derby exhibition were held.
• Reorientation activities are linked to the start of the university's second academic semester which began on Monday.
