Brighton Gala Day will offer fun for the whole family, organiser Colin Weatherall says.

The annual gala day will be held for the 16th time on January 25 at the Brighton Domain and Mr Weatherall hopes to repeat the success of last year's event.

Last year's gala day drew more than 12,000 people to Brighton and it was hoped about 10,000 would make the trip this year, he said.

The event would start at 10am and run until 5pm and would feature more than 100 stalls offering everything from jewellery and other crafts to a ''wide variety of food'', he said.

''There will be amusements and activities for young and old. We have got entertainers and singers throughout the day,'' he said.

One of the ''major attractions'' would be a simulated hostage event, staged in the early afternoon and involving the Dunedin armed offenders squad, New Zealand Police, Helicopters Otago and the Brighton Volunteer Fire Service.

Helicopters Otago would also be offering scenic flights.

The event will coincide with the 60th Dunedin to Brighton Veteran Car Rally and rally convener Tony Devereux said the rally promised to be one of the best yet.

About 60 cars manufactured before 1919 would make the trip to Brighton from the Octagon, Mr Devereux said.

He expected the first cars to arrive at the domain about 11.30am and they would be on display until 3pm, he said.

Drivers from as far afield as Palmerston North and Invercargill were bringing their cars and it promised to be a ''really good'' show, he said.
