Broad Bay cemetery decision reserved

A decision on whether the Dunedin City Council can expand the Broad Bay cemetery is expected early next month, after a resource consent hearing last week.

The council has applied for consent to expand the cemetery into a neighbouring section it already owns, providing room for a further 56 burial and 92 ash plots and extending its life by up to 30 years.

The cemetery has space for just six more burials and without the expansion is expected to be full within 12 to 18 months.

One neighbour has objected, saying the expansion would affect his indoor-outdoor living area.

The application was considered by council hearings committee commissioner Allan Cubitt last week but his decision was reserved.
