Bubbling with enthusiasm

Children are flocking to the Otago Museum in Dunedin these school holidays as they try to learn the secret to the perfect bubble - but the answer is still up in the air.

Suds Station performer and museum science communicator Andrew Sparrow (24) said certainties were few when it came to bubbles.

"They don't taste good, they're round and they're unreliable."

However, techniques, such as a steady arm, and a special bubble formula, increased the chances of a big bubble.

For the best results, Mr Sparrow recommended two litres of warm water, 100ml of a good quality dishwashing liquid and 50ml of glycerol, also known as glycerine and sold at pharmacies.

North East Valley Normal School pupil Sierra Sawyers (10), who mastered the art on Tuesday, said the bubble show was her favourite museum activity.

The Suds Station is part of the museum's free Freaky Science programme, running during the summer holidays.

Mr Sparrow said attendances had been variable, but sessions attracted between 30 and 50 children on average.
