Bus rolls into cars in central Dunedin

It was lucky a bus that rolled down Park St, Dunedin last night hit a parked car, or it might have ended up hurtling into George St, police said.

The empty Magic Bus tour vehicle was parked in Park St when its brakes failed, and it started rolling backwards, about 6.30pm.

It rolled into a parked car, and the collision deflected the bus across the road, where it glanced another parked car before landing in bush.

Constable Tracy Bransgrove said the bus had been parked for less than an hour and the brakes were thought to have failed. Police would investigate the bus and its brakes today.

Const Bransgrove said if the bus had not hit the first parked car, it would have continued rolling and been travelling at some speed as it entered George St.

The bus driver was located by police shortly after the accident, and he moved the bus to a flat street.

The bus and cars had only minor damage. Investigations were continuing, and no decision had been made on any charges, Const Bransgrove said.
