Let’s Get Trashed, a group of about 18 students, meets once a week on a street of their choosing to pick up rubbish.
Group organiser Cara-Lisa Schloots said she had the idea to create a formal group after picking up rubbish with friends several times last year.
She came up with the name when creating the Facebook group last September.
"I thought Let’s Get Trashed was a play on student culture as well as picking up rubbish.
"We hang out and pick up rubbish at the same time.
"It’s a nice thing to do and we always get a positive response from the public."
She was disappointed by the amount of litter in Dunedin streets.
"There’s a lot of rubbish.
"Some places are packed with it. We run out of space in our bags so we have to leave rubbish there which is frustrating."

Good work 'Let’s Get Trashed', great to see these sorts of community actions and people taking pride in our city. You do see the odd person about picking up trash. I pick up rubbish around the industrial area when walking through, generally people are quite shocked to see someone picking up rubbish! Finding bins can be a problem there too. Walking through Caversham a few days ago, a lady suddenly stopped her car, her young son had thrown something out the window. She asked him to go back and pick it up. Good on ya Mum!

Well done people lets hope some company sponsors you guys with T-Shirts jackets shoes and the such like. Well this is a good it does have to be questioned. 1. why are people being so lazy and dumping the trash 2. If it is happening the DCC should be employing staff to do this on a full time basis.
Recall years ago the street sweeper would drive around the streets, the grass would be cut, whats more this was paid employment for people, Now living over seas in Australia and they still have people who are paid by council to pick up rubbish they have a ute and park it up and one person walks a length of road each side.
Come on DCC sort it, but good on Get trashed for doing the Councils work.
