University joins MFAT panel

The University of Otago seems likely to gain further research-related funding after being appointed to a recently-formed Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Mfat) panel.

The university's Otago Global Health Institute, which includes the Otago Centre for International Health, has successfully bid for membership of Mfat's Monitoring, Evaluation, Research and Learning (MERL) panel.

The panel was recently established to contribute to Mfat's "organisational learning, transparency and accountability" through a range of consultancy and advisory services, over Mfat activities including New Zealand's humanitarian and development work.

The work will be delivered during the next three to five years and has a budget of $37million.

Otago institute co-director and panel member Prof John Crump said the centre had already successfully bid for more than $10million in research-related funding over the years, and appointment to the panel opened up positive possibilities.
