You never forget your first big rugby game, but some of the more boisterous members of the crowd at the Highlanders game against Moana Pasifika at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Saturday night might have battled to remember the finer details of the match come yesterday morning.

More than 12,000 people attended the opening clash in the Highlanders Super Rugby campaign, and by far the most enthusiastic were in the stand reserved for students and the young at heart, the Zoo.

They may not all have been dedicated southern men and women — Steamers, Blues and Warriors jerseys were among the out-of-town attire spotted in the stands — but they certainly sounded like it, making an enormous contribution to the match-day atmosphere.

And for those who might have been more into having fun than keeping track of the score, good news - the Highlanders won 35-21.
