A car crashed down a 4m bank into the Water of Leith in North Dunedin late last night.

A police spokeswoman said they were called to Woodhaugh St about 11pm last night where the Nissan had crashed down a bank.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the car, was taken to Dunedin Hospital where he was spoken to by police.

The extent of the driver's injuries were not known, but were not believed to be serious.

It was not known what caused the crash.

A St John spokeswoman said it did not transport the patient to hospital because he was picked up by a private vehicle.

The car was towed up the bank this morning.
