More than three years after losing its assembly hall to fire, Taieri College is putting the finishing touches on its new multimillion-dollar, multipurpose performing arts centre.

Work on the site began at Easter this year and it was expected to open in time for the start of school next year.

The facility, designed by Baker Garden Architects, contains an auditorium with tiered seating for up to 500 people.

Principal David Hunter said as well as being used for school assemblies, it would also have music and drama facilities with state-of-the-art light, sound and acoustics which could be used by community organisations as well.

Mr Hunter said it had been challenging to have school assemblies without a school hall, and pupils were looking forward to having their last assembly/prizegiving in the school's gymnasium next week.

Taieri College lost its 49-year-old hall in November 2015 when it was severely damaged in an electrical fire.

Thousands of dollars worth of property, including sports uniforms, trophies, portraits of former principals and school magazines dating as far back as the 1950s, were destroyed.
