Yesterday was National Scrabble Day, which coincided with the birthday of Alfred Mosher Butts in 1899, the man who invented the iconic board game.
As part of the day’s celebrations, the Dunedin Scrabble Club hosted some games at the South Dunedin public library.
For club president Ruth Groffman, it offered an opportunity to get her mind ready for this weekend’s tournament in the city, which would feature 20 of the country’s best players.
Ms Groffman has been playing competitive Scrabble for more than 25 years and racked up more than 2000 tournament games.
Some of the best competitors in New Zealand have played more than 5000 tournament games.
Scrabble has also featured in the Masters Games in Dunedin on several occasions.
