Dunedin's city centre will hum today, as more than 900 secondary school choristers and their musical directors arrive for the largest national choral festival the region has ever hosted.

The annual New Zealand Choral Federation Big Sing Finale begins tomorrow, and the country's top 24 choirs will compete at the Dunedin Town Hall over the next three days.

Finale co-ordinator Carole Randall, of Dunedin, said the competition had traditionally been an audio spectacular, but since the rise of Hollywood movies such as Pitch Perfect, the competition had become more of a visual spectacular, as well.

''There's a lot more choirs doing what we call choral-ography - movement with their pieces - particularly if they are doing a Maori or Pacific Island piece.

''Part of the adjudication process is on the choirs' presentations.''

Mrs Randall said the finale would culminate on Saturday night with a gala concert, at which each choir would perform individually, then together as a massed choir, before the results were announced.

The competition is also being live-streamed on the internet, she said.

The finale will be adjudicated by Debra Shearer-Dirie, of Brisbane, Michael Leighton Jones, of Melbourne, Peter Watts, of Auckland and Kelly-Ann Tahitahi, of Dunedin.

''It will bring a lot of money into Dunedin with regards to accommodation and food and just general expenditure. We all know how much teenagers eat.

''We encourage the students to have some fun.''
