Summer started with a blaze of sunshine in Otago yesterday with Dunedin airport recording the highest official temperature in New Zealand - 29degC at 4pm.

Residents in North Rd, where a prominent temperature gauge registered 31degC, might have begged to differ. But all would agree it was a cracker of a Dunedin day, remaining balmy enough for diners to eat out in the Octagon into the evening - despite MetService figures suggesting a recorded city high of just 22degC.

Alexandra and Balclutha recorded 26degC highs, Roxburgh 25.5degC, Oamaru 24degC and Cromwell 23degC by mid-afternoon.

The warm weather was expected to continue until Sunday.
