Classic children's characters are helping to give the Playhouse Theatre in Albany St a theatrical facelift.

Dunedin mural artist Filipa Croftskey has been painting the theatre wall since August, and has almost completed the 100sq m mural.

Co-designed by Croftskey and Logan Park High School pupil Luke Major, the sepia-toned mural depicts an array of children's characters and stories, including the White Queen, Peter Pan, Pinocchio and Geppetto, Jack and the Beanstalk, Alice in Wonderland, Hansel and Gretel, The Frog Prince and more.

The mural was commissioned by the Dunedin Repertory Society, which runs the Playhouse Theatre, as a means of improving the building's appearance and helping to counteract tagging.

The $4000 cost of the mural was funded by Keep New Zealand Beautiful, Resene, Keep Dunedin Beautiful, and the society. Local Taskforce Green workers helped with preparing the wall for painting.

The mural will be completed in the next two weeks.
