The pride of Otago rugby clubs will step into the ring in Outram on Friday.
Steve Nichol, the spokesman for the Club Pride Super 8 Boxing Event, said players from eight clubs would fight in the marquee on West Taieri rugby grounds to fundraise for the club.
Players lacing on the gloves were from West Taieri, Strath Taieri and Green Island, Maniototo and Zingari Richmond.
The winner would get an Otago rugby team affiliation fee worth $690 and a signed Highlanders jersey.
The gloves worn in the three-round fights had more padding than those worn by professional boxers and no fighter would be kissing the canvas, Mr Nichol said.
''We certainly don't want to see anybody getting hurt. If we see a fighter dominating another, we'll just call it.''
The fight card would include an auction fight, with the highest bid winning the chance to fight an Outram identity for two rounds.
It would also include an exhibition fight with professional male and female boxers Tickets ($10) are available from Outram Garage, Mosgiel Mobil, the Mornington Tavern or on the night.
