Freeze-dried ice cream was the big winner at the Otago regional Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme awards.

The awards were held on Wednesday at the Hutton Theatre and The Ice Cream Gals, from Columba College, were named overall winner for Otago.

The company will represent the region and compete for the top awards at the national event in Wellington on December 6.

It won the Otago Regional Excellence in Business Award, Best Financial Performance and was third in Best Marketing Plan.

It won awards for Best Oral Presentation and Best Business Plan earlier in the year.

Otago Girls’ High School company The Aditi Project won the Sustainable Business Award, while Brighter Books, from Otago Boys’ High School, was second in Best Marketing Plan.

This year, 110 pupils from eight high schools formed 24 companies to take part in the competition and launch new products.

Products have ranged from freeze-dried ice cream to gumboot removers and colouring-in postcards.

The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme is a learning experience for year 12 and 13 secondary school pupils who form a company, become directors, develop products and services that they market and sell, and keep any profit they make, all within a single school year.
