Bucket dredge Kimahia heads into Dunedin yesterday after a trip to Timaru.
Port Otago chief executive Geoff Plunket said the three tall structures attached to the dredge usually "jacked down into the seabed'' underneath the vessel as it did its work.
They were on the deck of the vessel for its trip.
The dredge, owned by Heron Construction, was involved in Port Otago's channel-deepening project "Next Generation'' in expectation of the arrival of bigger container ships.
Mr Plunket said the vessel had an urgent job in Timaru, but had returned to continue the Otago Harbour work.
Cruise ship Golden Princess was at Port Chalmers, so Kimahia had come into Dunedin for the day.
