Music fans screaming at missing out on a concert is not.

Dozens of Dunedin fans of United States superstar Lady Gaga spent yesterday scrambling for alternative flights to her first Auckland concert last night after connecting flights through Christchurch airport were cancelled due to snow and ice.

Two of the lucky ones were friends Kim Torrance, of Dunedin, and Monique Dimond, of Invercargill, who flew directly to Wellington from Dunedin yesterday morning.

"It's a shame a lot of people can't get up there, because it's going to be an absolutely amazing production," Ms Torrance said.

The blonde-wigged pair made a spectacular sight at the airport yesterday.

"We thought we'd dress up for the trip, because we won't have time before the concert when we get to Auckland," Ms Dimond said.

"We were waiting in the departure lounge, but we had to go outside, because everyone was staring at us." The cancellations affected five Air New Zealand flights and one Jetstar flight from Dunedin.

Dunedin fan Christina McBratney arrived at the airport at 10am for her 11.15am Jetstar flight, which was delayed until 2pm before being cancelled.

She was counting her blessings after spending an extra $15 on concert ticket insurance and will instead be at the Sunday concert.

"The tickets were so expensive that I thought it was worth it and I'm so lucky I did," she said.

"There were a lot of people really upset at missing out. One girl was crying at the airport."

Christchurch airport re-opened at lunchtime yesterday, "but was now dealing with a huge backlog", Dunedin airport advised.

All three of Lady Gaga's $179.90-ticket "Born This Way Ball" Auckland concerts have sold out. The 26-year-old, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, is a five-time Grammy Award winner and was named Forbes magazine's "Most Powerful Woman in the World" last year.

Lady Gaga performs in the Vector Arena again tonight as well as Sunday.
