Good fishing conditions and flat seas greeteda dozen  boats  in the annual Brighton Club fishing competition on Saturday.

Competitors  landed  469 fish and raised more than $3000 for charity.

Brighton Club president Geoff Bright  said entries and fundraising were down on last year.

The cancellation of a separate salmon competition may have confused some fishers, as might the club not hosting the Brighton event over Waitangi Day weekend, as usual, he said.

There were 44 entries with 12 boats. Both numbers were down slightly on last year.

"It was really good conditions, flat all morning but it got choppy after 1pm, as expected," he said.

"Best all-round effort" was won by Brent Patterson in his boat  Renegade, whose crew included his three sons, and who landed a total of 134 fish. Renegade won heaviest blue cod, paua, greenbone, moki and Jock Stewart.

Mr Patterson had targeted deepwater species offshore in the morning, before coming inshore later in the day. Mr Bright said the auction, sanctioned  by the Ministry for Primary Industries, raised more than $3000, compared with $5000 last year, all of which would be donated to local organisations.
