Cordon lifted after suspected gas leak in central Dunedin

A cordon has been lifted and people have returned to buildings they evacuated after a suspected gas leak in central Dunedin today.

Two neighbouring buildings on Bond St, including Consultancy House, were evacuated late this morning after occupants reported smelling gas.

Bond St and at least one neighbouring street were cordoned off, and firefighters with breathing apparatus attended.

A person at the scene said smell was detected on the fifth, third, second and ground floor of Consultancy House, but it was thought the gas was coming from the neighbouring building on the corner of Bond St and Queens Gardens.

Early this afternoon a Fire and Communications New Zealand spokesman confirmed fire crews had  left the scene, having found no further evidence of a gas leak. A Nova representative assisted in the search.

Bond St is now reopen to traffic and the occupants have re-entered both  buildings.
