Coronga Lane pick for way

''Coronga Lane'' is the favoured name for a new way in Mosgiel but Melbourne Cup winner ''Baghdad Note'' is running a close second for naming rights.

Dunedin City Council acting information solutions manager Rob Garrett said a new private way, part of a subdivision off Puddle Alley, would provide access for six new residential lots in Mosgiel.

The subdivision was the site of former Coronga Lodge stables, where Bob Heasley trained horses, including 1970 Melbourne Cup winner Baghdad Note, Mr Garrett said.

Baghdad Note was the second name proposed for the way but he expected the frontrunning name, Coronga Lane, to be deemed suitable.

The names would be discussed by the Mosgiel Taieri Community Board today and would then be considered by the council's infrastructure services committee, he said.

Both names complied with the council's road naming policy, he said.
