One appliance was sent to extinguish the flaming couch in George St, North Dunedin, about 7.20pm on Saturday, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said.
"It was deemed suspicious."
A fire investigator had not been contacted, the spokesman said.
Police were also called to the scene.
What was left of the couch was seen sitting near the entrance to Woodhaugh Gardens yesterday morning.
