A fire investigator has been called in after a fire in a forestry block near Wingatui last night.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said at this stage he could not say whether the fire was being treated as suspicious.

However, the fire service's response was "substantial", he said.

Eight trucks and tankers arrived from as far away as Waikouaiti, 45km north.

The spokesman said the fire service received reports of a fire in a pine plantation in Friends Hill Rd about 10.30pm.

Initially, crews responded from Mosgiel, Lookout Point, and Wakari.

Those crews arrived at the scene to find a fire of about 50sq m in size.

They called for extra assistance and a second truck from Mosgiel was sent, a tanker from Portobello, a truck from Roslyn, as well as tankers from Waihola and Waikouaiti.

The fire was extinguished about 11.30pm and crews remained on the scene mopping up hotspots until about 1am, he said.

A fire investigator returned this morning, he said.
