A witness has described seeing broken glass and a man in handcuffs after an incident in central Dunedin on Friday night.
Police have appealed for information following an altercation that took place in Bath St, which resulted in a man being taken to hospital with serious stab wounds about 11pm.
A patron at a nearby pub said he was sitting in Stuart St when he saw two cars racing down Bath St, one of which was a white car chasing the other.
Not long afterwards, he was approached by a member of the public who had walked up from Bath St and told him there was a man who was left covered in blood after a fight happened and a bunch of men were standing around the two cars.
The patron later walked past the incident in Bath St after police had arrived, and saw a man in handcuffs getting walked across the road, some broken glass and several police cars.
Police had arrived at the scene about 11.30pm, he said.
A hospitality worker at a nearby business said staff had been hosting a 21st birthday party at the time and they had not noticed the altercation, which appeared to have happened in an adjacent car park.
Staff had just closed the bar and people were leaving when the emergency services showed up, she said.
When police cars arrived up she thought someone might have been beaten up, but she was not expecting it to be a stabbing.
Officers had returned on Saturday morning asking for information, she said.
A police spokeswoman could not confirm anyone was taken into custody in relation to the incident.
Investigators were following positive lines of inquiry, she said.
Police were first notified of the incident after the victim had been transported to the hospital, and officers went there first.
That call was received at 11.27pm and officers arrived at 11.31pm, the spokeswoman said.
