An Oamaru man’s 24-hour crime spree has been labelled as "horrific" by police.

Tanera Malachi Otene, 27, appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday facing three charges of assault with intent to injure, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and two charges of burglary.

The crimes are alleged to have occurred on May 6 and 7.

Otene did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody to appear in the Oamaru District Court in June.

Sergeant Tony Woodbridge, of Oamaru, said the offending involved "serious violence".

"They’re all horrific offences to the people involved.

"People have ended up in hospital in relation to these and that’s serious violence.

"We’ve got no tolerance for that in our community and the community doesn’t have a tolerance for it either."

Despite the offending, Sgt Woodbridge wanted to reassure the public they were safe as these were not random acts of violence.

"It wasn’t random violence. It was actually targeted on people that the offender knew."

The man’s alleged offending began with an attack in Queens Cres at 11.45pm on Tuesday.

The next day, he allegedly assaulted another person on Thames Highway.

Both victims were taken to hospital with moderate injuries.

On Wednesday afternoon, police were called to a serious assault at the Centennial Park carpark where a woman was knocked unconscious.

Sgt Woodbridge said this incident was witnessed by parents and children at the hockey turf.

"We’ve received some video footage of part of that incident and it’s horrific and would’ve shocked the people who saw it.

"In the video footage of that, we can see a female getting punched twice and knocked to the ground."

After that, he said a white station wagon, driven by an unidentified third person, then drove at the defendant, ramming a black Subaru Legacy.

After the defendant left in the Subaru, the victim got into the station wagon and left.

Sgt Woodbridge said no gang patches or clothing was visible in the video.

He said the investigation was ongoing.

Waitaki District Mayor Gary Kircher said Oamaru was a "relatively benign" town and incidents like these were a rare occurrence.

"It’s highly unusual to have a spate like this.

"There’s regular reporting of petty crime but obviously this is more serious than that."
