A Mosgiel man who used a slug gun to shoot someone who owed him money has been jailed for more than two years.
Jayden Lombardi (25) previously pleaded guilty to charges of possessing an airgun, discharging an airgun with intent to injure, possessing a weapon (a baseball bat) and driving with a sustained loss of traction.
The defendant and his brother drove to a house in Quarry Rd to collect the debt on November 18 last year.
Lombardi parked on the road, took a bat out of his car and walked up the driveway.
The man who owed him money was prepared for his arrival and had a friend with him.
After an argument, the victim grabbed the bat from Lombardi and the defendant was chased from the property.
Undeterred, he was back within five minutes, this time armed with an airgun.
When the victim came at him, Lombardi fired several times into the man’s upper body.
Again, the defendant was chased away and this time the victim jumped on his vehicle before he fled the scene.
The man sustained four slug pellet injuries to his upper arm and torso, which broke the skin and caused minor bleeding.
He did not need medical attention, the court heard.Just weeks earlier, Lombardi had come to the police’s attention.
At the intersection of Factory Rd and Wingatui Rd, he deliberately spun his car twice, missing other road users by metres.
"These were deliberate actions where you put your mind to what you were doing and did it fully and comprehensively," Judge Kevin Phillips said yesterday.
He noted Lombardi had driving convictions and prior violence and firearm charges.
Counsel Anne Stevens said her client was "very open to the idea of receiving psychological counselling" and was now medicated for attention-deficit disorder.
She told the court Lombardi was a product of his upbringing.
"These offences ... it’s all a lack of self control, and anger," Mrs Stevens said.
"It’s an immature male ... who hasn’t had good role models."
Judge Phillips jailed him for two years one month and disqualified him from driving for nine months.
The court heard Lombardi had been behind bars for more than a year.
He had originally vowed to take the matter before a jury but changed his pleas when he heard a trial could be some months away.
A fortnight ago he was sentenced to 21 months’ imprisonment for an incident at a Mosgiel petrol station forecourt.
Friends of the defendant punched a man to the ground then Lombardi rifled through his pockets before fleeing the scene.
He served that entire sentence while on remand.
