Police urge public to report suspicious activity

Police say warmer temperatures in Dunedin are creating a more welcoming climate for crime and are asking the public to keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour around the city.

The warning comes after a man was seen acting suspiciously in Tennyson St on Thursday evening, while police also received a report from a Mornington resident who rumbled a potential burglar trying to break into their van to steal tools.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said the onset of the warmer months had resulted in more people getting up to no good around town.

"This time of year we're getting more and more people out and about and doing weird stuff.''

He appealed for residents who suspected they were seeing suspicious activity to err on the side of caution and call the police.

"If you see somebody [acting suspiciously], just report it ... earlier rather than later.

"So that wee thought of 'should I?' - just ring it in.''
