Gerobian Steven Taurus Joseph Kapua (26) was released from prison in February but within days was back behind bars for being kicked out of his accommodation and failing to charge his electronic anklet.
Documents from the Taupo District Court which were recently released to the Otago Daily Times showed his next release was similarly brief.
On March 29, Corrections went to see Kapua to fit him with a new tracker.
When he refused, police were called to the Moray Pl address, where they found him in belligerent mood.
Officers told Kapua he was under arrest and attempted to apply handcuffs.
The defendant reacted by grabbing a pen from one of the men and stabbing him in the hand, cutting him on his palm and index finger.
The victim was admitted to hospital and the wound had to be glued to stem the blood flow, the court heard.
In a statement, the officer said he had since become "wary of the dangers of my job".
Judge Greg Hollister Jones, who sentenced Kapua last month, said that was "understandable".
"Police are entitled to turn up to work without having this kind of injury," he said.
Kapua had previous previous convictions for violence, possessing a knife and breaching sentences.
More recently, he had been in trouble for sexual violence.
Judge Hollister-Jones said a report on the man’s background made for "sad reading" and charted the significant trauma he had endured along with the substance abuse which it had prompted.
"The way you have been dealing with matters in recent times means that you have a very high risk of reoffending," he said.
Kapua had been transferred to a prison in the North Island so he could be closer to whānau.
He was convicted of breaching release conditions and assault with a weapon, and jailed for eight and a-half months.
