Teens' savings stolen from money box

Two Dunedin teenagers lost almost $600 in cash when their Helensburgh home was burgled last week.

Acting Senior Sergeant Trevor Thomson, of Dunedin, said the alleged offenders entered the property on Helensburgh Rd near the Wakari Rd intersection and took two money boxes, some jewellery and a house key.

The mother of the teenage girls, Kathryn Harris-Bradley, said she suspected the burglary happened during the day while she was home.

''I think they came in while someone was home and stuck around for a while.''

Her two daughters had lost $580 in savings, and her cherished pounamu necklace was also taken, she said.

A can opener had been taken from the kitchen and used to open one of the money boxes, which was later found discarded in the garden, empty.

Ms Harris-Bradley said she had regularly seen two men in the area acting suspiciously.
