They may not all become All Whites, but Green Island Football Club members enjoyed their own passionate international sporting encounter with a composite overseas team from a visiting cruise ship on Saturday.

The visitors, named the "Regatta Tigers", and consisting of crew members from cruise ship Regatta, which was in port for the day, amounted to a mini-United Nations, with players from at least six countries, including South Africa, Croatia, Italy, Russia, Honduras and Jamaica, involved.

Although the visitors were hampered by having to play in gym shoes due to not having any studded football boots, they showed some fine individual skills.

They were delighted to get a chance to play the "beautiful game", displaying a great deal of energy and a willingness to run until they dropped.

Port Otago marine services manager Hugh Marshall helped liaise with the Green Island club after hearing crew members were keen to play.

He thought it was the first time a football game had been organised in recent times between visiting cruise ship crew and Dunedin players.

Former Green Island club president Andrew Roberts, who refereed the 2pm game on Saturday, at Watson Park, Port Chalmers, called it successful.

The score was 8-2 to the home side, but everyone had enjoyed it, and the visitors showed impressive skills, Mr Roberts said.

The football club was "absolutely keen" to play more games with people from cruise ships and was developing relationships to make that happen.
