It was another opening, another show at the Regent Theatre yesterday.

But this time, all the action was backstage.

Invited guests were ushered away from the stalls and asked to take the stage for the launch of fundraising for the Regent Theatre's redevelopment.

Otago Theatre Trust chairman Mike Shield said the trust aimed to raise $2 million towards the $6.4 million project, and hoped the Dunedin City Council would approve further funding for the project.

The redevelopment project includes demolishing and rebuilding the stage area to incorporate a modern 65-line counterweight fly system for hauling stage scenery; increased basement and storage area; new dressing rooms; and a larger theatre orchestra pit.

The auditorium will be repainted and recarpeted; new seating with more leg room installed; the Regent's centre aisle will be removed to increase the number of good quality viewing seats; disabled accessibility will be addressed; and fire protection systems will be renewed.

Mr Shield said the work had become necessary because the theatre had become outdated, uncomfortable and many of the backstage operations no longer met safety regulations.

Work was due to begin at the end of October next year and would take about 40 weeks to complete.

He said the project would see the Regent Theatre regain its place among "New Zealand's premier live arts venues".
