The woman chosen for a date with a man who advertised his desperate and dateless status on the street this week says she was too shy to ring up and got her sister to do it.

Mitzi Smart (36), who recently moved to Dunedin from Oamaru, was on her way to a job interview on Wednesday when she saw Dunedin man Danny Park holding a sign in Princes St saying "Need a date" with his phone number displayed.

Miss Smart does not know the outcome of the job interview yet, but by Wednesday night she knew she was chosen from about 15 applicants for a mystery bus tour and dinner tonight.

Mr Park (31) had recently broken up with his girlfriend and did not want to let half a $200 ticket go to waste.

Miss Smart said her "out there" sister rang up initially, chatting to Mr Park's sister whose number was on the sign.

Later that night she was rung by Mr Park, who picked her for the date.

On Thursday the pair went for a drink together. She said she got on well with Mr Park and was nervous, but looking forward to tonight.

Mr Park told the Otago Daily Times he was also looking forward to the date. However, he was a bit nonplussed by the media attention the "hare-brained" stunt had generated.
