The day, held in an effort to build community spirit, is a joint initiative between Inspiring Communities, Lifewise, the Mental Health Foundation and Neighbourhood Support NZ, with the Dunedin City Council promoting events held in Dunedin.
Among those who got behind the day were members of the Brockville Men's Group, who pitched in by painting Kasileta Evaga's house in Calton Hill.
Group member Michael Laufiso, who is also a community adviser at the council and part of the steering committee which promoted the day, said the day was about ''saying hello'' to your neighbours.
''It's also about taking responsibility for people in your neighbourhood as well, knowing who the older and younger ones are and which kids belong to each household,'' Mr Laufiso said.
This built community spirit and made neighbourhoods safer, he said.
Other events held over the weekend as part of Neighbours Day included a family day in Pine Hill, a picnic in Ocean Grove, a ''get-together'' in Green Island, a dinner in St Clair and a barbecue in Brockville.
