The workshop has been fenced off for many months and asbestos management work was carried out earlier this year.
Workers are on the site getting it ready for demolition.
A KiwiRail spokesperson said the Cumberland St site had been closed for some time, with staff and operations moving to Hillside Workshops.
The building was at the end of its life and would be demolished.
