Movers shift office furniture from the Otago Regional Council building in Stafford St to "Aonui", its new headquarters at the former The Warehouse site in Maclaggan St yesterday.

The multimillion-dollar premises will open to staff on April 28. A council meeting is scheduled to take place there the following day.

Port Otago acquired the building in 2021 and in 2023 the council-owned company and the council announced a 40-year lease agreement; initially for 20 years then followed by two 10-year right-of-renewals.

Construction was originally due to be completed by Christmas 2024, but was then moved to a later date.

The government announced in November last year reforms to abolish regional councils, replacing them with new combined territories boards made up of mayors from the region’s city and district councils.

The Otago Regional Council has submitted the regional council structure should be maintained until at least the next local body elections in 2028.
