DCC allocates $531,700 to community groups

More than half a million dollars in grants were dished out by the Dunedin City Council to a variety of community groups last week.

The council's grants subcommittee received 35 applications requesting a combined total of more than $900,000 in grants.

The committee accepted 22 of those applications, allocating $531,700.

Committee chairwoman Jinty MacTavish said this year's allocation process was new, designed to ensure successful applicants were ''aligned with council's strategic framework''.

In previous years, the DCC allocated ''civil grants'' during each year's annual plan process. This year's process separated those grants into two categories - city projects grants and city services grants - and had them allocated by the council's grants subcommittee.

Cr MacTavish said the successful applications covered arts and culture, social, recreation and the environment.
