The Dunedin City Council has stepped in to remove a roadblock for Otago Peninsula residents.

Vauxhall residents contacted the Otago Daily Times last month concerned someone could be seriously injured or killed by a 100-tonne landslip above Portobello Rd.

The slip has been blocking a 10m section of road and cutting access to two properties since heavy rain on June 17.

Resident Trevor Young (63), who has health problems, had been able to access his home only via the connecting driveway of a neighbour, causing alarm that emergency service vehicles would not be able to reach his property.

Dunedin City Council roading maintenance engineer Peter Standring said the slip was on the old Harington Point Rd, which had become a private driveway on road reserve, and was not the council's responsibility.

''The council have been well aware of this slip from the day it occurred. It was then deemed to be no immediate threat to public roading,'' he said yesterday.

However, it was later decided to remove the slip as a matter of public safety and the cost of the removal would be discussed ''at a later stage with the residents'', Mr Standring said.

''It was a decision taken out of public interest, as it's sitting above Portobello Rd, so we're going to step in and get it done, without prejudice.''

Mr Young welcomed the decision yesterday.

''That's great news. I'm very happy and relieved. We've been stuck up here with the road blocked for over a month.''
