The person tasked with overseeing Dunedin's local body elections will now be based in Christchurch.

Independent electoral officer Anthony Morton was appointed as the city's electoral officer at a meeting of the Dunedin City Council yesterday.

A new electoral officer needed to be appointed following the death of Pam Jordan last week.

Ms Jordan had served in the role since 2007.

Electoral officers oversee the running of elections and their duties include receiving nominations, compiling and certifying electoral rolls, counting votes and declaring the results

Mr Morton works for Elections.com which already provides the council with voting papers, electoral roll compilation, mail processing and election statistics and will do so again at next year's local body elections.

He has more than 40 years' experience in local government and election administration.

He has been the electoral officer for eight city or district councils, one regional council, three licensing trusts and two district health boards.

Deputy electoral officer Sharon Bodeker will remain in her role.

The council's governance support staff would be able
to handle the extra responsibilities and tasks which came with Mr Morton being based outside the city, Mrs Bodeker said.

Ms Jordan's contribution as the electoral officer for the council, Otago Regional Council and Southern District Health Board was also acknowledged at the meeting.
