Dunedin can expect to have a new deputy mayor as well as a new mayor after October's local body elections.

Cr Chris Staynes yesterday confirmed he would seek another term as a Dunedin city councillor, but had no expectations of continuing as deputy mayor.

He had served three terms in the role, all under outgoing Mayor Dave Cull, who announced earlier this year that he would not seek a fourth term as Dunedin's mayor.

Cr Staynes said he would consider another stint as deputy mayor if asked, but expected whoever replaced Mr Cull after October's elections would have their own ideas.

''I honestly believe the new mayor should chose who they wish.''

Cr Staynes also said his health remained good, despite a terminal cancer diagnosis in 2015, as medication was keeping the disease in check.
