Voter turnout tracking well

Dunedin and Queenstown voter turnout is trailing that of other southern councils with less than two weeks until polls close.

Dunedin City Council electoral officer Anthony Morton said, generally, voting returns across Otago and Southland were tracking well.

Return rates were "slightly ahead of expectations" at this stage of the voting period, which was 10 days longer than previous elections due to legislation changes, Mr Morton said.

As it stood on Monday, the Waitaki District Council boasted the leading voting return in the South (24.70%), followed by the Gore (22.75%), Southland (21.60%) and Clutha (21.0%) District Councils.

The Invercargill City Council (20.23%) and Central Otago District Council (20.20%) sat at the middle of the pack, and the Queenstown Lakes District Council (10.25%) and Dunedin City Council (9.13%) were bringing up the rear.

"For those electors who have received their voter packs but haven’t yet voted, we would encourage them to follow the instructions on their voting paper to select their preferred candidates and to then return the voting paper as soon as possible," Mr Morton said.

There had been no reports of voter pack delivery problems — if a resident had not received a voter pack by now, they should visit or contact their local council office and request a special voter pack, he said.

Regional councils’ voter return came under the city or district councils in their area.

Voting closes at noon on Saturday, October 11.
